Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

The star of Food Networks’s “The Naked Chief,” Jamie Oliver, has committed himself to change the state of school cafeteria lunches.  Here is his letter to the nation on this pressing issue from ABC.com:

Jamie’s Petition

You can also see Jamie on his new show “Food Revolution,” which airs on ABC. I have been keeping up with it and must say it’s very interesting and has given me ideas for future initiatives in my local neighborhood.

New data: Dramatic increase in girls’ age of marriage

Marriages at later ages was a micro-trend that I was brought to my attention over a year ago. Later data supports this continuing trend. So what does it mean for communities where raising a family at an early age is expected?

Original Post

There are large differences across the world in the age at the first marriage for girls. Some regions have experienced a dramatic increase. This can be seen in the new dataset compiled by Gapminder. Arab women who used to marry very early, now marry later and later. Today a couple is expected to have their own place to live as married. Hence, many families are forced to save for a long time before the young ones are able to marry. This social norm is a relative new phenomenon and is a major explanation for the increased marriage age.

Mainstreaming Emergency Contraception (EC) in Kenya

Original Report

In late 2006, the Kenyan Ministry of Health (MOH), Population Council and Population Services International (PSI) launched an initiative to mainstream emergency contraception (EC) in Kenya. The initiative included a core set of activities aimed at improving overall awareness of EC across the country and strengthening the quality of EC services in both the public and private sectors. It was intended to serve as a model for other countries interested in improving access to EC, and to generate in-depth knowledge on EC program strategies and utilization characteristics in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Special Initiatives: Children’s Health Fund

When children lack adequate health care, their problems compound. Disadvantaged children are more frequently affected by asthma. They are more likely to be overweight and at risk for type 2 diabetes. Hearing loss is less likely to be detected early, contributing to learning problems. Medically underserved children are less likely to have the specialist care they need.

Relevant now more than ever, Children’s Health Fund (CHF)’s Special Health Initiatives targeting underserved, at-risk infants, children and youth are being defined in measurable and pragmatic ways, allowing busy practitioners to do their clinical work while simultaneously providing them with the tools that will help them accurately measure their successes and self-evaluate their work on an on-going basis.  Specifically, the role of the interdisciplinary team in delivering cost-effective care in an enhanced medical home model that focuses on true integration and access to needed sub-specialty care and community services needs to be measured, described and disseminated.
